Siren after siren shrieked through Westchester Ave. and as people came out of their homes in curiosity, an incredibly loud bang punctuated the hysteria enveloping the small neighborhood--a high-speed chase down Westchester’s I-287 ended with a violent crash today in nearby Port Chester, NY. The driver and one Port Chester police officer were hospitalized with minor injuries.
What started as a burglary in Mt. Pleasant led to a pursuit on I-287 east at estimated speeds of 100 mph. Chris Bonnell of Port Chester was on his way home between exits 4 and 5 when the line of police cars caught his attention in the rearview mirror.
“I saw the line of cops, I got over to the right [to] let them go," Bonnell said. "Some more cops were going so I tailed them in… they tried to barricade the road. He hit this white Harrison Police car head-on.”
At the scene of the accident police officers from Mt. Pleasant, Harrison, and Port Chester were all present along with Westchester County police and New York State Troopers.
According to witnesses, the black Toyota fleeing the burglary nearly hit an elderly woman on North Regent Street before turning against traffic onto Barton, a one-way street. The Toyota then turned left down Wesley Ave. until it took out a Port Chester Police cruiser and a gold Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The neighborhood of Wesley Ave. is within a quarter mile of the Port Chester High School. Within just one hour of the incident students walked home in large groups as police investigated the crime scene. This matter is still under investigation and many details have yet to be released.
