PSGA Blog Number 11: Sabel Impeached Despite Executive's Pleas to Reconsider

Coordinator of Histories and Documents Steve Sabel was impeached by the Senate on Wednesday, Nov. 18 moments after Coordinator of Finance Nico Marceca urged the Senate to reconsider the proposition.

In response to the accusations presented by former Parliamentarian Russell Zambito at Sabel, Marceca filed charges against all but three members of the Senate. However, his plea was ultimately discarded as the Senate validated the impeachment shortly after.

“You can impeach anyone you want, and that’s what I’m trying to show you,” said Marceca. “Are you impeaching someone because they’re not doing their job, or because there’s a loophole in the Constitution?”

According to Marceca, the charges were directed at all but three senators, which included close friends of his. He said that by passing on those close to him, he illustrated the point that the PSGA should consider personal biases when judging the performances of others. Instead, he added, senators should be questioning what they’re doing for their constituents.

Marceca encouraged senators to read the bylaws of the Constitution, and only take drastic actions if they were necessary. After further explanation, he dropped the charges and allowed them to continue deliberating on Sabel’s impeachment in a closed session.

Zambito filed for the impeachment last week on the grounds of nonfeasance and misfeasance, or the failure to perform his duties.

According to PSGA President Kevin Collymore’s executive report, an official print manager was hired for The Independent, and a web-master was also approved for the PSGA Web site. Collymore also said he worked on drafting revisions of the Major Events/Weekend Security document at Civic Actions last week.

Coordinator of Clubs, Organizations, and Services Kristen Benedict said in her executive report that she met with Head of Tech Services Ed Willock to discuss a policy for using sound equipment in the dining hall due to the loss of the Southside venue in Campus Center South.
