Who doesn't love to take a moment to remember the whimsies and wonders that came along with being a kid? Watching your favorite childhood movies is one of the best ways to capture that feeling. Seeing scenes where the protagonist flies across the moon, fights evil-doers, or barely makes it out of an adventure in one piece never seem to lose their luster. So get your Netflix queue ready, because you will be adding a timeless classic, or a forgotten favorite, by the end of this list.

Recent films

Slumdog Millionaire
– I’ve already gone off on this film plenty of times (see: here) , and I saw at least 20 films last year that were better and more deserving of a title such as Best Picture. It’s not bad, and it qualifies as cute, but I don’t understand the rapturous orgasm that accompanied this film.

The Great Buck Howard, directed by Sean McGinly, was the eighth Talk Cinema film to be screened in the PAC on March 10. The comedy has a great cast, fronted by John Malkovich as the title character, Buck Howard, a magician whose career is at a standstill. Colin Hanks is Troy, his misguided assistant, and Emily Blunt is Valarie, a public relations spokesperson.

Newer Films

Elegy – This is a small film based on a novel by Philip Roth about a professor (Ben Kinglsey) having an affair with a grad student (Penélope Cruz). Elegy is strong until about halfway through, and then it falls into mushy sentimentality. The acting from the two leads in excellent, and there are really great supporting turns from Patricia Clarkson and Dennis Hopper. Beware of the small part played by Peter Sarsgaard, one of the worst actors working today for my money.  How does the man keep getting work?

This week in DVDs is a bit slow, but we'll consider this the welcome calm before the storm, as next week brings a big batch of DVD and Blu-Ray releases.

New Films

With the Oscars only hours away, I wanted to fill some of the empty cracks that I left in my film reviews from the past 5 months. Three of the five films nominated for best picture I have already reviewed in full, which I link to below. The other two I wasn’t able to see until a while after their release date, so I didn’t feel it was entirely relevant. But now that they are vying for best picture this Sunday, I felt it fit to do some write-ups on them. I threw in my predictions for this Sunday at the end.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Frost/Nixon

In the recession era, it seems 3-D is the new frontier of films. Most people can't afford to go to the movies anymore, and if they do, they don't want to run the risk of being bored. To foreign films, I say good luck. Audiences apparently want theatrics and spectacular spectacles. The film can be complete crap but if it looks pretty the audience will forget (see: the upcoming Jonas Brothers movie).
