Mainstream cinema is back. If there’s any big theme to the past year in film, it’s that. It may not seem like much of an accomplishment, but four of the top 10 grossing films from this past year were also critical hits: Avatar, Up, The Hangover, and Star Trek.

The trend on Broadway right now is to bring in high-profile film and television actors to star in short runs on Broadway. Fall of 2009 alone saw Hugh Jackman, Daniel Craig, Jude Law, John Stamos, Sienna Miller, and James Spader–many of whom have had significant stage experience on the resume already–star on the Great White Way. The biggest similarity: they are in straight plays.

Cadillac Records – I didn’t have a chance to see this one, but I actually have heard some pretty good things about it. It snuck its way into quite a few critics’ top ten lists for 2008. It’s the story of Chess Records, the record label that got behind such talents as Muddy Waters, Etta James and Chuck Berry. The film stars Adrien Brody and Beyonce.

Body of Lies - Ridley Scott's latest, starring Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio, came in and out of theaters without so much as making back more than 60 percent of its budget. When was the last time Scott made a truly great film?
