For Students, Food Delivery Has its Ups and Downs

Winter at Purchase usually arrives with the urge to stay indoors and have food delivered to your door, but sometimes ordering in can become more of a chore than a treat.

Whether you crave spicy wings or appetizing Chinese food, there is a restaurant for you. However, be prepared, because some services can run costly and include long waits.

What is it about places like Ming Dynasty, Campus Wings, or Michael’s Pizza that makes students cringe or hesitate to order in? Sophomore William Sklar said he usually doesn’t order delivery when on campus because his meal plan is sufficient.

Michael Murphy, freshman, said that he refuses to order take-out because of its poor quality. On the other hand, freshman Patrick O’Neill and sophomore Amanda Colban have slightly more positive views about delivery.

“I generally don’t order in food because I am broke as a college student, but there are a lot of times I wish I could order in after being left unsatisfied by a dining hall meal,” said Colban.

It is essential when waiting for a meal to arrive to be patient, especially when it comes to late nights. Colban said that she and her friends once waited three hours for Campus Wings to arrive with their 3 a.m. treat.

There are times when ordering in is a satisfactory option and fast solution to a hunger problem. O’Neill said he tends to do it when he has money and doesn’t want to eat at the same campus eateries he is used to. “The best thing about ordering food is that if you’re working, don’t want to be social, or take a long walk, then it’s convenient,” he said. “My personal choice would be General Tso’s chicken and dumplings from Ming Dynasty.”

He said that some people order from Sunshine Pizza, which he referred to as disgusting, and that students who order from there are just looking for a quick fix. “The worst part of it is that it’s not nutritious and it can be costly if you do it a lot,” said O’Neill.

For students like Murphy who said that Brooklyn Pizza is the way to go, it all comes down to avoiding that sometimes long and freezing trek to the Hub. Still, for him to order, there would have to be cheaper prices and food that’s actually worth paying for.
